Top Beauty Dos and Don'ts

Beauty trends are constantly changing. From nail art to pastel-colored locks, there are some new fads popping up every day. But you don't need to be a slave to the trends to be chic; embracing your personal style will keep you looking timeless and classic.

Follow these tips and tricks to keep your look fresh and fashionable without sacrificing your personality.

Beauty Do #1: Goodbye Helmet Head

Very structured, perfect hair can look dated. Hair with movement and natural texture is current, which means you can skip the complicated twists and flat irons. If you curl your hair, finger comb out the curls ala '50s pinups. If you opt for a bun on the back of the head, set it at the nape of the neck and let it get messy. If you're off to a formal event, looser, uncomplicated styles will look modern.

Beauty Do #2: Contrasting Eyes and Mouth

Play up your eyes or your mouth for your daily routine. Doing both eyes and lips can be overpowering for day, so highlight your favorite feature. Nude lips and smoky eyes are a great look. Or try red lips and a simple swipe of mascara.

Beauty Do #3: Apply Sunscreen Every Day no Matter the Weather

You've heard this preached enough, but it's true. If you get into the habit of sunscreen application daily, you will thank yourself when you're older.

Can't bother with too many lotions and potions? Consider a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream with an SPF of at least 15. If you can't stand looking pale, brush on a bronzer.

Beauty Do #4: Layer Fragrances and Lipsticks

Sophisticated women know how to properly layer fragrances to create their own signature blends. How to do it? Take your favorite scent and layer a new one atop it. Try out several versions until you find your favorite blend.

According to French Elle, the safest way to blend is via citrus notes, which can be layered with floral, woodsy and amber-y fragrances.

You can do the same with lipsticks. Create your own shades with mattes and glosses. If you don't like a shade, don't throw it out, perfect one with other colors in your beauty drawer.

Beauty Do #5: Moisturize After Every Shower

Skin left unmoisturized will itch, and itching (especially done when you're not paying complete attention) can cause scabs, which in turn can scar. In the shower, make sure you exfoliate your body thoroughly with a body scrub or washable loofah gloves every week. When you get out and dry off, slather on the moisturizer.

Beauty Don't #1: High Contrast French Manis and Pedis

A sedate French manicure can look elegant, but sharp contrasts between the base color and the tips can look dated. Aim for a more subtle color difference to keep the look current.

Whether youĐ’ have round, short nails or long talons, maintain your nails and cuticles by keeping them filed and moisturized. Even if you go polish-free, neat and clean nails are always timeless.

Beauty Don't #2: Heavy Foundation

So many beauty faux pas can be attributed to foundation misuse: Tell-tale lines along the jaw, a mask-like appearance, too-dark colors, or raccoon eyes.

To achieve a fresh face, stick to foundation use only on the areas that need it, typically around your eyes, along your nose and on your cheeks. You don't need foundation on your forehead or even neck. Remember to blend and consider different colors for winter vs. summer, when your skin is naturally lighter.

Beauty Don't #3: Scaly Anything

Keep your complexion fresh and vibrant all year long by exfoliating your face weekly with a great facial scrub. Your body needs exfoliating as well, so invest in scrubs in your bathtub or shower. As for lips, try Vaseline to keep lips from excessive scaling in winter.

Beauty Don't #4: Hair That Hasn't Been Cut

While you may love your long locks, going months without a trim can make even the most beautiful hair look ragged. You may be afraid that a stylist will cut too much, so look for a hairdresser specializing in long hair and ask for a "dusting". Dustings cut off less than half an inch and only where there are split ends, maintaining your length but removing the damaged areas.

Beauty Don't #5: Forgetting Fake Lashes

Fake lashes can be a simple and inexpensive way to add drama to your look. Drugstore lashes look great and add volume and length, drawing attention to your eyes.
